To guarantee excellence in the management, preservation and enhancement of sites, the State has implemented the Grand Site de France label. The Ministry in charge of Ecology manages this very demanding label. The Grand Site de France label recognizes both the great heritage value of the site, the quality of its maintenance and the value of the preservation, management and enhancement project proposed for the future. This label is a selective label. It is awarded for a period of 6 years, after consultation with the Higher Commission for Sites, Perspectives and Landscapes, and the Network of Grands Sites de France.
It is the recognition of a management in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, reconciling the preservation of the landscape and the "spirit of the place", the quality of the reception of the public, the participation of the inhabitants and the partners in the life of the Grand Site. It can be withdrawn at any time in the event of a breach of the commitments of protection, enhancement, local economic development and respect for the visitor. The Network of Grands Sites de France brings together Grands Sites which have already obtained the label and others who are working to obtain it one day.
In 2010, the Grand Site de France label was incorporated into the environmental code (art. L341-15-1).
